Workshops

The Chemistry Department employs skilled members of staff in each of its three workshops, comprising the Glass, Electrical, and Mechanical workshops.  

School pupils must be 15 years old or more at the commencement of their workshop placement. 

Placements are likely to include shadowing a member of staff in their work and completing supervised tasks. 

You will finish the placement with a greater understanding of the role and importance of the workshop team. 


Please note: we do not respond to unsolicited requests for work experience.

When applying for one of our advertised placements, please ensure that you have read the eligibility criteria and information above.

Accommodation, travel and food are not provided for work experience students. Please take this into consideration before applying.

We will endeavour to notify you of the outcome of your application within a month of the deadline. Placement offers are conditional on the timely receipt of satisfactory references and parental/guardian consent.

Human Resources

School pupils must be 16 years old or more at the commencement of their placement within Human Resources. 

Placements are likely to include shadowing a member of staff in their work and completing supervised tasks. 

You will finish the placement with a greater understanding of the role and importance of the HR team within a busy academic department.

Research Laboratories

School pupils must be 18 years old or more at the commencement of their placement within the Physical and Theoretical Chemistry Laboratory (PTCL) or Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory (ICL).

Placements are not available in the Chemistry Research Laboratory (CRL).  

Placements may include a short scientific project. 

You will finish the placement with a greater understanding of the role and importance of academic research and scientific pursuit.

Chemistry Teaching Laboratory

Due to construction work associated with the Life and Mind Building, we are unable to offer placements in the CTL currently.

School pupils must be 16 years old or more at the commencement of their placement in the Chemistry Teaching Laboratory (CTL) and must be pursuing appropriate A-level (or equivalent) subjects.

Placements, which are only available outside of the University of Oxford's term time, provide the opportunity to work alongside laboratory technicians and other members of the CTL staff.

Work may include supporting an outreach event, or helping to develop and  improve outreach and undergraduate experiments.

You will gain an understanding of how a teaching laboratory runs.
